The Porsche 997, 991, Cayman, and Boxster models with PDK transmission often experience a significant fault that can temporarily disable the transmission. This fault, which involves the distance and speed sensors integral to the PDK transmission, can lead to costly repairs and inconvenience for Porsche owners.
The PDK transmission utilizes these sensors to gather speed and distance data. The distance sensor unit, or “sensor tower,” monitors the position of each shift rod using four integrated absolute distance sensors. If any of these sensors malfunction, the gearbox control unit cannot communicate effectively with the sensor pack, resulting in gear shift failures and making the vehicle inoperable.
This fault usually manifests through codes such as P1731, P1732, P1733, P1734, P1735, and occasionally other 17xx errors.
Previously, dealerships recommended replacing the entire PDK transmission as the sensor was not available separately. However, the sensor is now sold independently, offering a more cost-effective solution. Check out our latest product offering for more details.
This repair can address the following warnings and codes:
- Vehicle is inoperable or in limp mode
- Dashboard message indicating “Gearbox fault…”
- OBD codes 1731, 1732, 1733, 1734, 1735, and some 17Dx
- OBD errors stating “Shift rod N displacement sensor”
- Diagnosis by a dealer/shop indicating “distance (or position) sensor failure”
It’s crucial to understand that there’s no warning or preventative measure for a distance/displacement sensor failure. The original sensor will inevitably fail over time, so immediate repair is highly recommended.
